Blackwood Collaboration

Universal Containers are proud to have produced a fantastic futuristic product for Blackwood. Blackwood are a company who specialise in housing and care, they are dedicated to improving the lives of disabled people by providing homes that are designed to help them to live independently. They asked us to provide a transportable product that they could take around the UK to showcase their vision of a futuristic, yet accessible home. We created a floor plan which could be copied in their homes in the same layout by using 3 32ft x 9ft flat panel cabins. We did this so that the units could be split, transported and put back together as and when the customer required. We built the framework from mild steel sections and folded flat panelled sheets. Windows were installed in addition to a sliding door; the frames were two tone in colour, brown on the outside with white inside. Internally, the units were lined in Fibo wall boards and fully insulated in Rockwool with wooden flooring throughout. We created 6 rooms in the cabins consisting of an entrance, bedroom, study, bathroom, kitchen and open plan living / dining room. The electrical fit out for the units were first fixed with high end spot lights, sockets, and data sockets and each unit had its own consumer unit and inlets. The kitchen and bathroom were fully professionally fitted by the Universal Containers joinery and plumbing teams.

The rooms were an excellent challenge; all the components needed to be moved up and down wirelessly including worktops, sinks, basins etc. Even the high level kitchen cupboards needed to be manoeuvred down to enable accessibility. The units had electrically operated blinds  with everything controlled by a phone or tablet through Wi-Fi. Finally, the cabin was fully furnished and a disabled access aluminium ramp was added to each unit.  We are extremely proud of the work we completed on this particular project as we feel it enabled us to showcase the high end potential of the products and services we provide at Universal Containers.
