Location: Dronfield, Derbyshire

Project Overview

Universal Containers designed and built a bespoke covered stand for Sheffield FC, the world’s first football club.

Created from a 40ft high cube shipping container, the new stand will give the club’s younger fans their own area where they can stand together, sing and cheer the team on at every match.

The Brief

As Sheffield FC’s following continues to grow, the club needed additional spectator space at its ground. It also wanted to improve the matchday experience for its younger fans by giving children and young supporters a dedicated place to gather and support the team.

Universal Containers was asked to produce a stand that would:

  • Provide additional covered standing space.
  • Create a dedicated area for children and younger fans.
  • Give fans at the back a clear view over those standing in front.
  • Provide shelter from the weather.
  • Fit within the available space at the club’s ground.
  • Reflect the club’s black colour scheme.
  • Provide space for sponsor branding once installed.

The Challenge

Unlike a conventional seated stand, the new structure needed to accommodate a group of standing fans while giving everyone a clear view towards the pitch.

A completely level floor would have restricted visibility for children and anyone standing further back. The internal layout therefore needed raised viewing levels that would allow fans at the rear to stand above those at the front.

The stand also needed to provide shelter without affecting the view of the match. This required protection around the sides and overhead, while keeping the front open towards the pitch.

Our Solution

We used a 40ft high cube shipping container as the base for the conversion. Its additional height provided the space needed to create a covered standing area with multiple raised levels.

The container was adapted to include:

  • A fully covered standing area.
  • Raised steel steps to create different viewing levels.
  • An open front facing the pitch.
  • Steel barriers across the front of the stand.
  • Enclosed side and rear walls for added shelter.
  • A durable black finish inside and out.
  • Space for Sheffield FC and sponsor branding.

The stepped layout allows younger fans and children standing towards the back to see over those in front, improving visibility throughout the stand. The steel barriers define the front of the standing area without separating fans from the action on the pitch.

Painting the complete structure black gives the stand a smart, consistent appearance that can be completed with the club’s sponsor graphics once it has been installed.

The Result

The completed conversion provides the club with a compact, purpose-built area designed around the way its younger fans experience matches.

The covered structure will give them their own place to gather, sing and support the team, while the raised levels will help children and fans further back retain a clear view of the pitch.

The project also gives Sheffield FC valuable additional spectator space as interest in the club continues to grow. The stand is a distinctive new feature at the ground and a focal point for the next generation of Sheffield FC fans.

Why Shipping Containers Work for Stadium Stands

Shipping containers provide a strong and adaptable base for compact stadium stands and spectator areas.

Much of the conversion can be completed away from the ground before the finished structure is transported to site. The standing levels, barriers, shelter, colour and branding can all be adapted around the requirements of the club and the space available.

Due to shipping containers being built from Corten steel, a weathering steel that forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to the elements, they are able to better resist further corrosion. This allows the structure to withstand rain, wind and changing weather conditions, making converted containers a durable option for outdoor sports grounds.

Their modular format also allows clubs to add spectator space without constructing a permanent stand entirely on site.
