FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General FAQ’s

What is the difference between a new and used shipping container?

A new shipping container, or “one-trip” container, has only made a single overseas journey. It looks almost brand new, with factory paint and minimal wear. New containers are ideal for projects where appearance matters, like offices, retail spaces, or high-end conversions. Used containers have been on multiple trips, so they might show dents, scratches, or rust patches. They’re a more budget-friendly option and still perfectly suitable for storage or utility-based conversions.

What’s the difference between high-cube and standard containers?

The main difference is height. Standard containers are about 8 feet 6 inches tall inside, while high-cube containers add roughly an extra foot, making them around 9 feet 6 inches high. This extra foot of height provides more internal space, which is ideal for storing taller items or creating larger interior volumes in conversions

How much does a container cost?

Container prices vary depending on size, condition (new or used), and any modifications. As a rough guide, used shipping containers often start from a few hundred pounds, while new containers cost more. Delivery, customisation, and hire options also affect pricing.

For more details, check out our guide on container prices or contact us for a personalised quote based on your specific needs.

What is the lifespan of a shipping container?

With proper maintenance like painting and rust treatment, shipping containers can last around 25 to 30 years. When they’re converted for construction or more permanent uses, their lifespan can extend even further, sometimes up to 50 years or more.

Are shipping containers vermin proof?

Shipping containers are designed to be wind- and watertight, with tight-sealing doors and steel construction that naturally deters rodents and pests. However, if not properly maintained or if left open, pests can occasionally find entry points. Regular inspections, replacing worn door seals, and keeping the container raised off the ground will help keep them vermin-free.

What is a shipping container made from?

Shipping containers are primarily made from Corten steel, a strong, weather-resistant steel alloy designed to withstand harsh marine environments. The flooring is usually marine plywood treated for durability, and containers also include steel doors with secure locking mechanisms.

Read our in-depth guide on the materials used to make shipping containers to find out more.

Do I need planning permission for a shipping container?

Planning permission depends on how and where you intend to use the container. For simple storage on private land, planning permission may not be required, but if the container will be used as a permanent structure, office, or living space, or if it’s placed in a visible or regulated area, you may need permission from your local council. Always check local regulations before installation.
